5 DIY Kid - Friendly Holiday Decoration Ideas

As a mom of two girls, I am always looking for fun activities to do with them during the long holiday breaks. Here are five ideas that will get the kids involved in holiday decorating and can be a wonderful way to create family memories and spend quality time together. Here are five DIY holiday decoration ideas that we will be trying out in our family this season!

Handmade Ornaments: Gather supplies like plain ornaments, acrylic paint, markers, and craft glue. Let the kids use their creativity to paint and decorate the ornaments. They can create handprint or fingerprint ornaments, paint holiday scenes, or write personalized messages. Don't forget to add the date to commemorate the year.

Paper Snowflakes: Making paper snowflakes is a classic and easy craft for kids. All you need is white paper and scissors. Teach them how to fold the paper and cut out various shapes to create unique snowflakes. Hang these on windows or walls to add a wintry touch to your home.

Gingerbread House Decorating: Buy a pre-made gingerbread house kit or bake your own gingerbread pieces. Set up a decorating station with icing, candy, and edible decorations. Let the kids decorate the gingerbread house with their own colorful and creative designs.

Homemade Garlands: Create festive garlands using materials like construction paper, popcorn, cranberries, or even old holiday cards. Kids can cut out shapes, string popcorn and cranberries onto thread, or make a garland from recycled cards. These garlands can be hung on the tree, along mantles, or in doorways.

Salt Dough Decorations: Salt dough is easy to make with common kitchen ingredients. Children can roll it out, use holiday-themed cookie cutters to create shapes, and then bake them to harden. Once cooled, they can be painted and hung as ornaments on the tree.

PSA: Remember to supervise younger children when using scissors, hot ovens, or other potentially dangerous tools. These DIY decorations not only add a personal touch to your holiday decor but also provide a wonderful opportunity for children to express their creativity and feel a sense of accomplishment and make awesome memories and family traditions.
